Coral reefs and atolls in the Republic of the Marshall Islands once took a beating from U.S. nuclear bomb testing; now they're taking a beating from mining, sewage pollution, and construction. Small ships are doing their part to damage corals as well: A private operator leasing a 100-ton Marshall Islands-owned ship ran it into coral reefs at Mejit Island in the northern Marshalls, holing the ship and making it unsalvageable.

Elsewhere in Micronesia, coral reefs in the Republic of Kiribati are being hit by urban pollution, construction, and poorly treated sewage; those in the Republic of Nauru are still nearly intact.
